  • 0.75 cups buttermilk Can substitute with milk and vinegar.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Important for flavor.
Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 0.25 cups pure maple syrup Main flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons milk Any plant-based milk can be used.
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt Balances sweetness.
Toppings (Optional)
  • chopped pecans or walnuts Add for crunch.
  • sprinkles For decoration.
  • crumpled bacon For a sweet-salty kick.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Combine dry ingredients by whisking together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg in a mixing bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, sugar, and vanilla until smooth.
  3. Fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients until just combined.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking pan.
  5. Pour batter into prepared baking pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  6. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before transferring to wire rack.
  7. Prepare glaze by sifting powdered sugar and mixing with maple syrup, milk, butter, and salt until smooth.
  8. Pour the glaze over cooled bars and add desired toppings.
  9. Let the bars set for 30-60 minutes before slicing and serving.
