  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce essential for flavor
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey/maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika or regular paprika
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper
For the Bread and Cheese
  • 4 slices thick-cut bread sourdough or ciabatta
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese or cheddar/pepper jack
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese preferably fresh
  • 4 tablespoons butter softened
  • to taste fresh parsley or basil as a substitute

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • Baking Sheet
  • Oven

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef or turkey for 6-8 minutes until fully cooked and crumbly. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent.
  3. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and smoked paprika. Season with salt and pepper. Cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of bread and place buttered-side down on a baking sheet.
  5. Spoon the savory meat mixture onto the unbuttered side of each slice. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese over the meat.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Optionally, broil for 1-2 minutes for a crispy top.
  7. Remove from oven, let cool slightly, garnish with chopped parsley, and serve warm.
